What is a general checkup?
A general checkup is a routine visit with your primary care provider to look at your overall health. You do not need to be sick or have a specific complaint to come in.
The visit usually covers three things: a review of your health history and any current concerns, a set of basic measurements and a physical exam, and a conversation about which screenings or tests may make sense for you.
The purpose is straightforward. A routine checkup focuses on preventive care. Part of that is screening tests, medical tests that look for a disease early, at a point when treatment may be easier.
At PrimaryCareIM, a general checkup is also where a relationship starts. If you are new to the practice, it gives your provider a baseline to compare against next year, and it gives you a regular point of contact for anything that comes up in between.
Who a general checkup is for
If any of these sound like you, a routine checkup is a good place to start.
You have not seen a doctor in a while
You are new to Southwest Florida
You feel fine and want to keep it that way
Something small has been bothering you
You have a family history you want to stay ahead of
You are helping a parent stay on top of their health
What your general checkup may include
Every visit is shaped around your age, health history and what you want to talk about. Most routine checkups include some combination of the following.
A review of your health history
Vital signs and basic measurements
A physical exam
A look at your medications
Lab work, when your provider recommends it
A screening and vaccination review
A clear plan for what happens next
Less about finding something wrong. More about noticing changes early.
While there are still easy options.
Some conditions are quiet at first
Screenings work best on schedule
Your provider gets to know you

Checkup, physical, or wellness visit, which one do you need?
These terms get used interchangeably, and that causes real confusion. Here is how we use them at PrimaryCareIM. If you are unsure which visit you need, call us and we will help you sort it out.
General checkup
A routine visit to review your overall health, raise any concerns, and plan your screenings.
Annual physical exam
A yearly, more structured head-to-toe examination. Also used for employment, school and sports requirements. See our physical exams page.
Annual Wellness Visit (Medicare)
Medicare Part B covers a yearly “Wellness” visit. It is built around a conversation with your doctor or other health care provider, and the aim is to create a prevention plan for you. It is not the same as a routine physical exam. We offer Annual Wellness Visits, ask our team when you call.

How to prepare for your checkup
A little preparation makes the visit more useful. None of this is complicated.
Bring your medication list. Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements.
Bring any recent test results or records from other providers, if you have them.
Write your questions down before you leave home. It is easy to forget the one you actually came in for.
Ask us whether to fast. Some blood tests, such as a cholesterol panel or a blood sugar test, need you to fast beforehand (usually 8 to 12 hours) with plain water allowed. Not every checkup includes fasting labs, so call ahead and we will tell you exactly what to do.
Keep taking your medicines unless we tell you otherwise. Before any test, ask your provider whether your usual medicines are still fine to take. Do not stop any of them on your own, wait until your provider tells you to.
Bring your insurance card and photo ID.
Routine checkups for adults and seniors
What a checkup focuses on shifts as life does. Here is roughly how we approach each stage.
Adults
For adults, a general checkup is often about setting a baseline and staying ahead of risk. Blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and blood sugar, plus a conversation about family history, stress, sleep and habits. If you are new to the practice, this is where care starts. Learn more about adult primary care at PrimaryCareIM.
- Baseline measurements and history
- Screening review for your age and risk
- A place to raise small concerns early
- Vaccination review
Seniors
For older adults, checkups often cover more moving parts: several medications, more than one specialist, and questions about memory, balance and energy. We build in time for that. Learn more about senior primary care.
- Medication review across multiple prescribers
- Screening review appropriate for age and health status
- Coordination with specialists you already see
- Family and caregiver questions welcome
Insurance and coverage
PrimaryCareIM works with Medicare, many Medicare Advantage plans, and a range of major insurance providers.
Coverage for a routine checkup depends on your specific plan and on what is done during the visit. Preventive services are often covered differently from tests ordered to look into a symptom. The most reliable thing you can do is call before your appointment. Tell us your plan and what you are coming in for, and we will tell you what to expect.

Frequently asked questions about general checkups
How often should I get a general checkup?
There is no single answer that fits everyone. Every adult should see a provider from time to time, even while feeling well, and the right interval is something to work out with your own provider. How often you come in depends on your age, your health history and any ongoing conditions. Call us and we will help you set a schedule that makes sense.
What is the difference between a checkup and a physical?
People use the words interchangeably. At PrimaryCareIM, a general checkup is a routine visit to review your overall health and plan your screenings. A physical exam is a more structured head-to-toe examination, and is what you need for employment, school or sports requirements. See our physical exams page, or call and we will point you to the right visit.
How long does a checkup take?
Plan for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on what is covered. A physical exam on its own usually takes around 30 minutes. If you have a lot to discuss, tell us when you book so we can allow more time.
Do I need to fast before my checkup?
Only if fasting blood tests are planned. Tests such as a cholesterol panel or a blood sugar check usually require fasting for 8 to 12 hours, with plain water allowed. Not every checkup includes those tests, so call our office beforehand and we will tell you exactly what to do.
Does a general checkup include blood work?
Sometimes. Your provider may order blood tests such as a cholesterol panel or a blood sugar check based on your history and risk factors. It is not automatic, and it is decided with you during the visit.
Does Medicare cover a general checkup?
Medicare Part B covers a yearly “Wellness” visit once every 12 months, and you pay nothing if your provider accepts assignment. This visit is not a routine physical exam. If your provider adds a service that Medicare does not cover (a routine physical exam, for instance) you could be billed the full cost of it. Coverage varies by plan. Please call our Lehigh Acres or Fort Myers office before your visit so we can help you check.
Do I need a checkup if I feel completely fine?
It can still be worthwhile. Some conditions cause no symptoms early on. High blood pressure is the clearest example. It rarely causes anything you would notice, so many people have it without knowing, and a reading is the only way to find out. A checkup also gives your provider a baseline to compare against later.
I am already managing a chronic condition. Is a checkup still useful?
Yes, and it often works alongside ongoing care. If you are managing diabetes, blood pressure, heart or kidney conditions, ask about chronic care management and medication management as well.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes. PrimaryCareIM accepts new adult and senior patients at both the Lehigh Acres and Fort Myers offices.
Can I do a checkup by telehealth?
Some parts of a visit can be handled by telehealth, but a general checkup includes measurements and a physical exam that need to be done in person. Telehealth is available for some appointment types, call and we will tell you what fits.
Ready to schedule your checkup?
If it has been a while, or you are just not sure where to start, a routine checkup is a simple first step. Call the office that is closest to you and our team will help you find a time.
